Why aren't they seen more often you ask? Well in the twilight and the predawns between wakefulness and dreaming the Fae Folk gather them up and use them for their own art projects, which of course don't have the same physical properties as our own. They're usually willing to share, but our gatherers have to be quick to grab them before they dissolve into the aether. Then there's this alchemical process of turning the magic into metal and shell- and- well. I'll spare you the gnomish details.
In a range of rich, beautiful colors, these scales can be used in a variety of ways:
Collage and mixed media projects
Currency in Live Action Role Play
Tabletop game pieces
Any other ideas for this-world art
As long as you can borrow a bit of the imagination of a pixie or share our love of the shiny, the possibilities are endless. As ever, don't limit yourself to the expected.
We originally considered offering them separately, but just like peanut butter and jelly, we accidentally discovered they're better together. They make our artsy hearts happy. We may consider offering them separately in the future if we get enough demand.
The Mundania Detail
The pouch contains a mixture of Mussel Shell drops that are approximately a half-inch in diameter, and metal "Scale-Shaped" drops that measure 1/2 inch by 7/8 of an inch.
The merfolk seem to shed their scales more easily, as these are far easier to come by. The pouch is mostly made up of the delicate, jingly round scales, with a few of the more rare dragon-scales thrown in for accent. We try to include around 10, give or take a couple.
The Here-Ye Part
Honestly, we don't really have any huge warnings about these. They don't pose a mess-hazard like the bottled dusts or pixie glitters, and it would take quite a lot of effort to cut yourself on one. We're talking heart-with-a-spoon effort. We don't recommend it.
The alchemical processes involved in pulling them from the aether leave them mostly in a solid state of metal or shell. I suppose it's possible that a merfolk scale or two might break in transport. We hope not. But we've had to actually try to snap them to break them. So if it happens, it won't be more than one or two from the assortment.
And- they're small. So there's the ever present choking-hazard threat. Not a toy.
But other than that, it's pretty easy to adore the rich color and shine, and the ideas of deep sea caverns and soaring dragon riders they invoke. They're lovely, and we hope you'll love them as much as we do.
